VIJAYAWADA: Machani Hemalatha did her poor parents proud by securing a first rank in the medical stream of Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet). Hemalatha’s father Machani Veeranna is a small-time employee in a textile shop, while mother Kalavati is a housewife, in Kurnool town. Hemalatha secured 156 marks out of 160. Veeranna is supporting his three daughters to pursue education with his meagre earnings.
When Hemalatha defied abject poverty to top the highly competitive screening test for medical admission, her elder sister too rose to her father’s expectations by getting a seat in BSc (Agriculture) last year.
Hemalatha took coaching from a corporate college in the city in 2014-15 and had acquired 245th rank. Yet, she failed to qualify for medical admission as she was under-age at that time. While her family conditions did not allow her to take coaching and reappear in the exam in ensuing year, a Nellore-based corporate college adopted her and prepared her for this year’s Eamcet. “Medicine is my dream and I have realised in spite of all odds,” a beaming Hemalatha told the TV channels after paying a courtesy call to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at his camp office here. Her eyes brimmed with joy when she was patted by the CM after releasing the CET results. Over 1.03 lakh students appeared for the Eamcet medical stream held on April 29.
Naidu asked the authorities of the human resource development and private colleges to prepare the students for Neet (national eligibility cum entrance test) from the next year as it was inevitable. He also wanted the HRD department to take measures for preparing the syllabi accordingly. The CM informed that the government was trying to establish an international university in Amaravati region.
